Article: Teenage Mothers Denied Education (in Kenya)

  • Mood:

Part of Kuwait for Kenya's (K4K) initiative in spreading peace and support youth development and education in Kenya, our volunteer member Maryam AlHamad kindly directed our attention to a moving article titled "Teenage Mothers Denied Education". Thank you Maryam!

Here are some quotes from the article:

"13,000 girls leave school every year in Kenya due to pregnancy, according to research released at the beginning of May by the Centre for the Study of Adolescence, a non-governmental organisation that works on reproductive health, gender and social policy for teenagers."

"
Stigma and discrimination by teachers are reported as two of the main reasons teenage mothers abandon their education."

"
Kenya also has a Return to School policy which encourages the establishment of centres where young mothers could continue with their formal education while breast-feeding their children. It also calls for counselling for the girl, parents, teachers and other students in the school."

"
It is not yet clear whether the new policy truly demonstrates a new commitment to implementation from government. Thousands of young mothers can only hope so."

Performing Arts in Kuwait

In the 50s, 60s and 70s, Kuwait enjoyed a very liberal environment that allowed the country to host and appreciate major Performing Arts events performed by reputable international groups. However, in the last 20 years, our community suffered from various regressive measures that adversely affected educational system and all kinds of liberal arts, especially Performing Arts.

LoYAC placed the revival of Performing Arts as one of its major objectives and decided to invest in it believing that one cannot ignore such proven tool for unleashing the creativity of the youth and building their self confidence.
